Boring is Profitable: In Praise of the Unsexy

September 20, 2025

Silicon Valley is obsessed with "disruption." They want to change the world, cure death, and colonize Mars. That's great. We need those people. But at Adduco, we have a different obsession: boring businesses.

The Beauty of the Mundane

We love businesses that do unsexy things. Waste management. HVAC repair. Industrial logistics. Specialty fasteners. Why? Because they are essential. No one cancels their trash pickup during a recession. No one decides they don't need heat in the winter.

These businesses have what we call "Lindy Effect" durability. If a technology has been around for 50 years, it will likely be around for another 50. If an app was launched last week, it might be gone by lunch. We aren't betting on the next consumer trend; we are betting on civilization continuing to need plumbing.

The Moat of Boredom

Boring businesses have a natural moat: nobody wants to compete with them. It's hard to recruit Stanford grads to disrupt the septic tank cleaning industry. This lack of competition leads to rational pricing, stable margins, and loyal customers. You don't have to spend 40% of your revenue on Facebook ads just to acquire a customer who will churn in three months.

Cocktail Party vs. Bank Account

Owning a boring business might not make you the coolest person at a cocktail party. You won't get a cover story in Forbes. You won't get invited to speak at TED. But you know what you will get? Consistent cash flow. High barriers to entry. And a good night's sleep.

There is a quiet dignity in providing a service that people actually need. While others chase the next AI-crypto-metaverse unicorn, we will be over here, happily investing in the plumbing of the economy. It might be boring, but the returns are anything but. In the end, you can't eat prestige, but you can definitely eat the dividends from a well-run logistics company.
